The Coherent Heart: Attuning Your Heartbeat to the Beat of the Universe
Somatic Coniunctionis: Restoring the Feminine Parasympathetic Nervous System
“The goal of life is to make your heartbeat match the beat of the universe, to match your nature with nature”—Joseph Campbell
This is the first in a series of three courses and focuses on “heart coherence,” how to achieve it and grow your coherence baseline. You will learn how to relieve stress, anxiety, and depression while building heart resilience. Heart coherence is a natural mind-body state of ease, essential in today’s challenging world.
Heart rhythm is the rhythm of the soul.
Psychiatrist and founder of Depth Psychology, Carl Jung, both applauded science and cautioned against descending into a one sided view of the world: “Science is not indeed a perfect instrument, but it is a superb and invaluable tool that works harm only when it is taken as an end in itself. Science must serve; it errs when it usurps the throne. [. . . ] It is part and parcel of our understanding, and it obscures our insight only when it claims that the understanding it conveys is the only kind there is.” Western culture has the science down, yet is lacking in the more subtle aspects of the heart and healing.
Heart coherence (HRV biofeedback) underlies health, in part, because it reflects a balanced autonomic nervous system, where the sympathetic branch (masculine) neither prevails nor dominates the parasympathetic (feminine) branch. When the masculine and feminine aspects of the autonomic nervous system are in sync, operating coherently, stress and stress-reduced diseases are organically reduced, from the inside out. I refer to this as the somatic coniuncitio, an inner marriage of the autonomic nervous system.
In this course, heart coherence is explored using the underutilized biomarker HRV and examined for its implications in healing and transformation. The emerging field of neurocardiology is a discipline that summons a new appreciation for imagination and psyche, and their role in healing. Neurocardiology research demonstrates that the heart has its own unique “heart-brain.[1]” Based on research findings, the heart is a sensory organ and contains its own distinctive intrinsic cardiac nervous system. Neurocardiology recognizes heart intelligence.
Heart coherence serves as an alchemical bridge between psyche and soma, existing on one continuum. Measured through heart rate variability and regulated by the autonomic nervous system, heart coherence reveals a heart in a state of “tao” where healing and transformation begin. A coherent heart syncs up with the rhythms of anima mundi, providing a path for individual and collective healing.
